To mark Art Night’s original 2020 date and to celebrate the Festival’s fifth anniversary, Art Night presents Trailers — a series of short online works by the 10 artists in the postponed festival programme: Oona Doherty, Sonya Dyer, Adham Faramawy, Guerrilla Girls, Mark Leckey, Isabel Lewis, OOMK, Imran Perretta and Paul Purgas, Philomène Pirecki, and Alberta Whittle.
Art Night’s invitation to artists asked the question What do you feel like showing right now? Trailers offers a glimpse into the works the artists are developing for Art Night 2021, or what they’ve been up to during lockdown — a self-contained release of ideas, thoughts or feelings made for right now. Works include video, sound, text, performance and downloadable materials.

Drawing on research into landscapes in Skye and London undertaken earlier this year, Isabel Lewis stages a digital rehearsal as an interactive situation for the screen. Filmed in her Berlin studio, with sound and camera operated by Mars Dietz, the rehearsal is accompanied by multiple windows into her working process. Isabel brings together dance, music and storytelling, including excerpts from ongoing conversations with Skye-based composer Richy Carey and artist Dirk Bell. The collage of video and other hyperlinked sound and text files weave a circuitous narrative about interspecies bonds and the potential for ecological attunement in the reading of myths and stories.
Isabel invites you to open the following rehearsals, conversation and research in separate windows (right click and select open link in new window) and to arrange the multiple overlapping windows on your screen in a way that is pleasing to you. Tune in and out of attention to the rehearsal as you engage the other windows.

Dancer and Choreographer Oona Doherty has shared an insight into her Art Night commission Lazarus Multiverse alongside supplementary viewing and listening in the form of the original solo performance of Lazarus filmed in Black Box Theatre, Galway (2017) by Luca Truffarelli and a soundtrack of deconstructed holy music. We recommend beginning with Oona’s video introduction.

Message.. continues Hailing Frequencies Open, Dyer’s ongoing body of work intersecting the Greek myth and constellation of Andromeda, actor Nichelle Nicols’ astronaut recruitment activism and the complex genesis of HeLa cells, the first human materials sent into Space. This poster features an inscription in Morse Code, purportedly received from the Andromeda Galaxy in June 2020. This message will form the basis of Dyer’s commission for Art Night 2021.
Influenced by sources including Derrick Bell’s The Space Traders (1992), Alice Coltrane’s compositions, the diasporic longings of roots reggae and the ubiquity of digitally disseminated misinformation, Message envisions an inter-galactic communique which speaks to the urgency and peculiarity of now.
Small Fortune, Good Fortune is a downloadable publication from OOMK/Rabbits Roads Press — manifesting the power of print, snacks and clairvoyance. Ahead of their Slow Waves Reading and Reflection Room commission for Art Night 2021, this PDF zine facilitates localised and personal reading and reflection with fortunes written by friends of Rabbits Road Press. Content and future predictions can be browsed or baked into being.
The Guerrilla Girls have made a short video responding to the Black Lives Matter movement alongside an introduction to The Male Graze, their project in development for Art Night 2021.

Continuing their research into bodies, desire and queering ideas of the natural, Adham Faramawy has created a series of video sketches in lockdown, two of which are presented here. Approaching the making of these as a way to think through ongoing research and reflect on how to move forward from here, Adham has also written an expanded text that you can read below.

Imran Perretta & Paul Purgas present a track from their collaborative project AMRA. The excerpt brings together spoken word, field recording and elements of historic sound archives as part of their ongoing research into the sonic legacies of South Asia.

Alberta suggests a few preparations for the viewing of this work “Light a candle of your choice, make sure you are somewhere comfortable at home – in bed with a blanket or on a sofa, ideally your whole body will be supported by something or someone soft”.
Working with phenomena including bioacoustics, vibration and electromagnetism, Philomène Pirecki presents a recent audio work developed from material generated during heightened sensory and emotional states.
During lockdown Philomène has been sorting through a collection of notes, references, images and screengrabs, focused on her interests in the metaphysical realm, folklore, beings, legends and rituals. While indexing these she set up an Instagram account to share some of this ongoing research, which you can find here. RECIPE: SPRING AUBERGINES
“I love this dish because it sings of summer. Served just warm with nutty brown rice, garlicky yoghurt and a rocket salad on the side, it makes a lovely vegetarian supper. It also works really well with grilled or barbecued lamb.”

1) Slice the aubergines into 1cm rounds. Lay in a colander and sprinkle generously with salt. Leave to degorge the bitter juices for about 30 minutes – beads of moisture will appear on the aubergine flesh. Before cooking, pat each aubergine slice dry with kitchen paper.
2) Heat a 1cm depth of olive oil in a large, fairly deep frying pan over a medium-high heat. Fry the aubergine slices, a few at a time, until golden brown on one side, then turn and brown on the other side. Remove and drain on kitchen paper.
3) Melt the butter in another saucepan. Add the chopped tomatoes and garlic slices and season with a good pinch of salt and some pepper. Cook over a low heat for about 15 minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
4) Meanwhile, put the crème fraîche into a small pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Allow to bubble until reduced by a third, then take off the heat and add the tarragon, parsley, thyme and chives. Add half of the Parmesan and taste for seasoning.
5) Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line the bottom of a large, shallow ovenproof baking dish with a layer of aubergine slices. Follow with a thin coating of the tomato sauce and a sprinkling of Parmesan. Continue layering in this way, finishing with tomato sauce. Pour over the crème fraîche and sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan. Leave the dish to sit for a few minutes to allow the flavours to get acquainted with each other.
6) Place in the oven and bake for about 20–25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to stand for 5 minutes or so. Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with a pinch or two of salt.
7) Scatter over some finely chopped parsley and thyme sprigs to garnish and serve… but not too hot!
NOTE: Aubergines are at their best during the summer months, although you can buy them throughout the year. Look for aubergines with firm, glossy skins that feel heavy in the hand.
1.5kg aubergines, trimmed
Freshly ground black pepper
Olive oil, to shallow-fry
50g unsalted butter
1kg ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
4 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
400ml creme fraiche
2 tablespoons tarragon leaves, finely chopped
2 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley, plus extra to finish
1/2 tablespoon chopped thyme leaves, plus sprigs to garnish
1 tablespoon finely chopped chives
50g parmesan, freshly grated
Extra virgin olive oil, to drizzle
NOTE: Substitute with vegan creme fraiche and remove the parmesan to make this a vegan dish.
COCKTAIL: ELDERFLOWER COLLINS
40ml of Gin (Vodka will work too)
20ml lemon juice
20ml of elderflower cordial
Pour over ice, stir and top up with soda water —
Or leave out the alcohol for a lovely mocktail!
